ESPN adds 2 new sports to 2009 Winter X Games

ESPN’s Winter X Games 13 Adds Two New Disciplines

Women’s Skiing Slopestyle and Snowmobile Best Trick Added to Line up; Live Coverage on ESPN and ABC

Winter X Games 13, to be held January 22-25, 2009 in Aspen/Snowmass, Colo., and aired live on ESPN and ABC, will feature new events, a new superpipe and enhanced coverage across ESPN platforms.  Two new disciplines will make their debut – Women’s Skiing Slopestyle and Snowmobile Best Trick.  For the first time at Winter X Games, snowboarders and skiers will ride a 22-foot superpipe.  Fifteen hours of live programming on ESPN and ABC will be offered as well as Winter X Games 13 coverage on ESPN International, EXPN.com, ESPN360.com, SportsCenter and ESPN2’s X Center.

Women’s Skiing Slopestyle will feature the top eight skiers in the world competing on a variety of rails and jumps. Each skier will take two runs, and their best run will determine their final ranking.  Snowmobile Best Trick will feature three athletes.  Each athlete will take two jumps and will be judged by the fans in Aspen and those watching on television.  The athlete who receives the most fan votes will take home the gold medal.

“The X Games have always been about progression and creativity, and with the addition of these two new events, we continue that tradition,” said Rick Alessandri, senior vice president, X Games franchise.

With the addition of the two new disciplines to the competition schedule, all events will be held at the base of Buttermilk Mountain. No spectator events will be held in downtown Aspen or Wagner Park.

The annual Winter X Games is the premier winter action sports event in the world and showcases more than 200 of the world’s top athletes.  Buttermilk Mountain at Aspen/Snowmass will continue to host the Winter X Games through 2010.  Winter X Games 13 is free to the public.

Deegan Interview with Etnies

brian deegan etnies moto mx fmx metal mulisha

etnies TM Matt Chapman recently had some quality Q&A time with Brian Deegan. Read up as the man behind the Mulisha opens up about the industry, family life and... phobias.

So Brian, how long have you been on the etnies program?
I’ve been with etnies since 97, so geez, over 10 years!

When did you guys actually start the whole Metal Mulisha thing?
Metal Mulisha started around '97. But the clothing company probably started in '99.

And how’s that going?
Good, it’s one of the fastest growing action sports companies ‘cause it’s the real deal and kids know that we’re the best team out there and we’re the best group of riders. So we’re growing super fast.

How many riders are on the Mulisha team?
Over 20 riders. You know international and America.

Some people say you’re kind of like the father figure of the sport... how do you feel about that?
I think it’s great. I was the OG of the sport and was there to help pioneer it. I took a lot of chances to make it work and I’m pretty stoked to know that I’ll always be remembered as like, the Tony Hawk of skate… you know the guys who were like the true OGs. And that’s kind of the way... no one will ever take that away from me, ya know?

We were the first guys to start the sport and that’s one of the hugest things. That’s one of my biggest accomplishments.

Around 10 years ago when all this started, did you think that you’d be where you are... or the sport would be where it is today?
I always had visions of it being big, but not when it first started. When it first started I was just stoked to ride dirt bikes and get paid a little bit of money. Didn’t realize it would get this big, but it certainly did.

I’ve noticed recently that you’ve kind of changed a little bit and maybe just grown up a bit. Got older but, you know, starting out having the really bad boy image and now you’re more of the family man and business man.
Yeah, well we had to build the company to build the image. We had to start somewhere, and so that’s how Mulisha blew up, you know? Being the hardass, bad motherfuckers that backed it up on dirt bikes. I think we’re still that, but I had kids and I have to be a role model to represent to my kids… and I had to grow up. And to run a company, to blow up the company, to give back to the sport and all this stuff, I had to become responsible. To be a leader, you have to look upon leadership as a role model and stuff. I had to grow up, had to be a man, had to be a father and so I did it dude. But we’re still bad motherfuckers on dirt bikes that will pretty much back it up, you know?

brian deegan etnies moto mx fmx metal mulisha

Do you have any phobias? With riding or spiders is there anything that just irks you or bugs you?
I have phobias honestly of being on big ships you know?

Oh really? Like a cruise ship or something?
Yeah, I don’t even like being around them you know? Something about it. I always have nightmares of falling off of it and…

Like having a cruise ship leave you there?
No, like falling off next to the boat and looking up and it’s all gnarly looking.

Oh. What’s the gnarliest thing you’ve ever seen happen, like in real life? Moto or non, either way.
Well obviously Ackerman’s deal you know? That was probably the gnarliest thing ever. Chris Ackerman crashing and breaking his neck and having to give him CPR 'till the helicopter came. That was the gnarliest thing.

That’s definitely right up there. It was a bad scene. What’s the worst decision you think you’ve ever made in your life?
Having a business partner in Mulisha for sure.

What do you feel the best decision you ever made was?
Probably having kids.

Yeah, that’s a pretty cool deal.
Also going to church. At least I plan on going to heaven, you know? First and foremost best decision.

Do you feel that that pretty much turned your life around quite a bit? Do you think you were heading down a bad path or you were just kind of dicking around a lot?
I just think I was lost, with no direction, just looking for getting a thrill out of being a dickhead. And now I’m going to church and being a Christian you know? I’m not saying I’m on the perfect path and I’m the perfect guy now but it’s definitely given me a guideline. So at least I feel guilty about doing the things I used to do.

That’s cool. But it makes you feel a lot better.
Yeah definitely, I feel way better now. I have a kind of reason for being. Instead of just cruising around and just taking up oxygen.

With that, what would you say your main goal in life is?
The main goal in life is now to raise my kids right. Be a good role model. Be a good example, you know? Try to not live in sin basically. Which is really hard to do living in California.

It’s quite hard anywhere being an athlete in the spotlight. Traveling and being around a lot of bad people probably doesn’t help.
No, it’s hard. That’s the biggest challenge for sure.

What’s the worst and best advice you feel you’ve ever gotten?
Worst advice would probably be to do that backflip at Bam's.

Yeah, someone just saying, "Oh go for it. It’s TV." You just kind of wanted to not feel like you let anyone down. Everyone was there and…
Yeah, advice from probably the TV crew and myself. That’s not my shit man. And the best advice is probably like I said... trying to change my attitude and be a good person... be a better role model.

And who was that from, like your pastor or something?
Probably from the pastor telling me basically that the way I was living my life wasn’t beneficial to anyone and just to be a more positive person.

Yeah. A lot of kids are out there lost these days so hopefully they could use more people to look up to that are doing the right thing.
Best advice, probably from my chick that said, if you don’t quit partying I’m leaving. And taking the kids, so that was pretty good advice.

Interview with Dirty Deedz founder Joe Boin

Dirty Deedz has become the number 1 Underground Streetwear brand in the whole of Perth.
If your driving around Perth i can almost guarantee you will see a car repping a DD sticker.
The man behind its success is none other than Joe Boin, he sits down with us to have a chat about all things from Clothing to Ink, and Art...............

LYG - Gday Mate how are you and where are you at the moment?

J - Im good thanx bro , im just chillin at home in front of the comp doing some design work for dirtydeedz and fillin out this for ya :)

LYG - When and where did DD first come about?

J - DirtyDeedz started in 2003 , it was a idea i had since i was back in high school i always wanted to have my own clothing label.
so in 2003 and mentioned the idea to a good mate and we thought hey we should give it a go, then we started it from there.
first off we didnt have a name for our company so i went through so many ideas and most the good ones were taken and trademarked.
then one night i watched the aussie crime black comedy movie called "dirty deeds" and i thought i really like that name..its catchy and kinda cool
so i put the idea to my mate and we both agreed on "dirty deedz" as our new company name . we spelt it with a "z" just to be differant :)
we checked for a trademark on the name in our categorie and its wasnt taken so we snapped it up :)
the we got the ball rolling from there

LYG - Any inspirations ?

J - I have many inspirations for dirtydeedz most of which come from the american streetwear labels you see today.
graffiti, tattoos, street art, lowrider culture are all major inspirations for me too

LYG - Ive noticed you have been getting pretty covered in the ink lately?

J - Yeh man ive been going a lil crazy lately hahaha.. first i started with my right sleeve which was designed and put together myself and with the skills of tattooist elmz formerly of lords of the skinz.
elmz then left the tattooing industry leaving me with no-one to do my work ...with my tattoo junkie cravings needing to be fullfilled i soon found lance daly @ cherry bomb tattoo in north perth
my mate who is a piercer there introduced me to him and ive been goin there ever since.
first thing i got from lance was my neck tattoos which i designed myself which are 2 evil and good swallows which say "sinner" one side and "saint" on the other
id say they would be my favourite so far :)
my second fav would have to be my snake tattoo which is on my left sleeve and go,s onto my chest its still not completed though.
ive still got plenty of skin left so im sure these favourites will be replaced by new ones soon to come ..hahaha

LYG - I see your a pretty good street artist, tell us abit more about that ?

J - Well ive been a graffiti writer for over 10 yrs now and have been drawing or de-facing property since i left my mums whomb :)
after a while i started getting sick of doing my art and not getting nothing for it, so thats another reason why i started "dirtydeedz" .
i also recently started air burshing about a year and a half ago which is pretty fun , ive sold a few canvasses and have got many requests for more .
my air brush work is done on a painted white board and i just use black and grey shading which gives it a tattoo style look ,i hate working with colour its not my style.
most my paintings are of lowriders and girls and just things that go with the culture i love the l.a (los angeles) style artwork and chicano art.

Ok i got a couple of multiple choice questions?

Caddilac or Chevy ? man thats a hard question ..ILL HAVE ONE OF EACH :) haha

Redbull or Rockstar ? redbull and yager miester :)

Myspace or facebook ? myspace

Jacks or beam ? nah not a fan of that syrup

mr cartoon or kat von d? mr cartoon for sure. kat von d,s deep man voice really annoys me after a while

summer or winter? summer i love ,winter is cool though cauz you can rep your favourite hoodys and beanies .

LYG - What is the stupidest thing you have ever done?

J - haha ..where do i start
getting blind drunk at black bettys night club and losing any memory from 10.30 pm onwards ..( i seriously reckon my drink got fucked with ) haha
waking up almost 8 kms away in the rain on the side of a hwy with no belongings and even my belt was gone ! ( i think i got jumped) haha
i litterally ran home in the rain not knowing what the fuck happened ,
next day i felt like shit and i called the cops to check if i had been arrested and said something bad happened to me and i didnt know what it was , they said i didnt get arrested and it wasnt on the records and probably thought i was a drunk :)..i was like hmm ok so i left it.

4 weeks later i recieve a court summons turns out i had been arrested that night for disorderly conduct and resist arrest aswell as wilful damage .. i tried to fight a mob of bouncers then got pinned down by cops and violently escaped
running off and fly kicking someones mirror off a car whilst they drove past haha then thats when the cops must of got me good ..maybe they tasered me ? fuck knows i surely cant remember haha
i try to explain my case to the judge that i think i seriously got my drink spiked and it was totally out of character for me , but i do have a history of drunken disorderlys and other drunken charges so the judge just thought i was
a lunatik piss head and gave me a whoping fine of $2200 :( and said i should quit drinking.
so i took his advice and quit drinking (for 2 weeks ) haha.....

LYG - What is the future for DD?

J - Well my old business partner had enough of the clothing game and was just recently bought out of dirtydeedz by another mate and now we are getting the ball rolling quicker then ever.
the future for "dd" looks pretty promising we are planning on going big but not too big where we look like we have sold out..we still want to be a underground label
but we want to have as many products and accesories available to our customers/supporters

And lastly can you give us 1 word to describe LYG

LYG - DOPE!
